Multiplication
Groups:
My first year of teaching a colleague introduced me to
multiplication/division groups. She had found that many students came
to 4th and 5th grade without a lot of knowledge about multiplication.
It wasn't enough to just memorize the facts, they had to know how to do
multiple digit multiplication and division. She had haphazardly
assembled sheets to create groups but I took it a step farther and
developed my own. [I never developed the division ones because I found
once my students got a good grasp on the multi-step multiplication,
they didn't need the intervention with division.] Here are the sheets
to implement this in your classroom if you'd like. (I just kept track
of the levels on a big homework chart from the teacher store.)
Please
note that even though they are called "groups", these activities are
done independently by students. The "group" just designates where
they are with their multiplication skills (like an independent
reading level). I have had a ton of success with these at 4th and
5th grade. Students can do them for morning work, after small groups in
math or as they finish other activities early.
